The cloud service ecosystem of today is unquestionably a walled garden, partitioned, cultivated, and owned by a few well-resourced tech companies. By 2031, experts project that this rapidly expanding cloud industry will reach an astonishing $2.5 to $2.7 trillion. Major companies such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform primarily dominate cloud services such as data storage, computing, and networking, comprising about 65% of the market share and leading to significant and potentially undesirable consequence. Cutting-edge technologies such as generative AI, edge computing, 5G, VR/AR, and real-time analytics create significant demand and present new challenges for cloud infrastructure and services. Web3 technologies, encompassing smart contracts, peer-to-peer networks, cryptography, and blockchain systems, offer potential solutions to these cloud-related challenges.
